SEVIS
As of January 2003, all participants on J-l exchange visas are required to register their whereabouts with the Immigration and Naturalization Service through SEVIS - the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. SEVIS is an Internet-based system that maintains accurate and current information on non-immigrant exchange visitors (J visa). SEVIS enables schools and program sponsors to transmit mandatory information and event notifications via the Internet, to the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State (DOS) throughout a student or exchange visitor's stay in the United States. To keep your visa from being canceled by the SEVIS Computer system, your sponsor must validate your visa within 30 days of the start date on your DS-2019 form. At the time of validation, sponsors are to verify that the current U.S. address of the exchange visitor is correct. SEVIS will automatically terminate the Form issued to an exchange visitor if a sponsor fails to validate his/her participation in a program prior to 30-days of the program start date. The deadline for sending your sponsor information is 2 weeks from your arrival date. Later information could cause your visa to be invalidated. The quickest and most accurate way to update your information is to visit the SEVIS web site: http://www.ice.gov/sevis/index.htm
